Blue Moon

712 NE 45th
Seattle, WA 98105

4:30 to 6:30 daily

score:

The Blue Moon opened in 1934 at the current location exactly one mile from the original border of the U-dub, which at the time was the law. The law was repealed in the 1970's but the pioneer spirit remains. The Blue Moon was tapped for demolition in the 1990's, but development was halted by public outcry and it remains a Seattle standard, like the Pike Place Market and Boeing.

Earl’s on the Ave.

4720 University Way NE
Seattle, WA 98105

(206) 525-4493

Noon to 1:00pm and 4:30 to 6:30pm daily

score:

Earl’s doesn’t offer the most varied U district Happy Hour, no beer or food, just double wells. When reviewed the crowd was sparse, with a few working class intellectuals talking about politics, some college kids shooting stick and a few professors sitting at the bar nursing their academic wounds. Earl’s is a fun place, and I’m not just saying that because the bartender thought I was sexy.

score:

On this sunny, spring Monday there was plenty of room available at Finn MacCool’s. The crowd varies with the quarters at the U dub. The outdoor seating is a small bar that extends out to the front sidewalk. It seats about ten. And just in case you couldn’t tell by the name, Finn MacCools is an Irish pub.

score:

You know you’re getting old when you can remember when Flowers actually sold flowers. Now they make cheeks and conversations blossom. On this sunny, warm Monday afternoon, there was plenty of room available. The bartender said happy hour gets busy, but never so busy there isn’t room available. Well drinks are a fair pour, but not too strong. (Like there is such a thing). The barstools are really high, but the bartender tells me they don’t get a lot of causalities.

Galway Arms

Seattle, WA

Daily 4 to 7

score:

Galway Arms has a happening happy hour, one of the best happy hours in Seattle. This reviewer snagged the last seat at the bar, which was nice as there was no cocktail waitress for the tables. But nobody seemed to mind, and the service was fast and friendly. The crowd was UW students and regulars who were hard core democrats. Galway Arms is an Irish bar, now offering Wi-Fi. The kitchen makes everything from scratch, right down to the tarter sauce and soda bread.

score:

Plenty of tables were available, as well as spots at the bar on this cloudy, Friday night. Sinead, a genuine Irishwoman from County Clare, told me it was an especially slough (that’s Irish for slow) Friday night. The Irish Emigrant is a good place to go alone, as the regulars will chat you up instantly.

score:

Don’t be fooled by the smallness of Kai’s, there is a whole other room in the back where you can get the Happy Hour food and drinks specials. Kai’s offers food with a southern European flair. Shannon, the bartender, is fast friendly and from Texas.

May loves to serve cosmos! Perhaps they are big fans of "Sex and the City", or just know a fun drink when they see one. They offer three varieties- traditional, melon and gin, all for $4. If you're a pool player, The Monkey pub is the place to be. Free pool during happy hour, which is one of the longest in Seattle-until 9:00 already! A 50-year-old neighborhood bar, they hang mementos of tatoo contests and memorials to past regulars on their walls. the Monkey Pub doesn't really have a menu, but they encourage bringing in your own food from one of the neighboring restaurants. If you like beer and sports, this is your place! You can watch beer being brewed (Big Horn) and balls being tossed, hit and pitched, all at the same time. Tommy’s Night Club

4552 University Avenue NE
Seattle, WA 98105

(206) 634-3144

4-7pm M-Sa (Closed Sundays)

score:

Tommy’s is a nightclub, so it is the perfect place to go for a U District Happy Hour. Nobody thinks of it. But this old location of much loved Lox, Stock and Barrel, offers a good happy hour. Not with the $3 appetizers during the Happy hour, but a $3 burger and fries the whole time the kitchen is open. The mozzarella sticks were really good, but there were only three of them. So it seems that Tommy’s takes their regular menu and cuts the size in half, justifying the half price. Sooooo, I guess you can call it a special.
